In 1799, French soldiers in Egypt unearthed a dark granite slab covered with carved inscriptions. This artifact, later named the Rosetta Stone, contained the very same royal decree written in three distinct scripts: Egyptian hieroglyphics, everyday Demotic script, and ancient Greek. Because scholars could easily read the Greek text, they were finally able to compare sentence structures and decipher the lost language of the pharaohs, unlocking centuries of forgotten human wisdom.
